Minister Flanagan to represent Ireland at UN Conference on Global Compact for Migration in Marrakech
The Minister for Justice and Equality, Mr Charlie Flanagan T.D., is in Marrakech, Morocco today, to represent Ireland at the U.N. High Level Inter-Governmental Conference to Adopt the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration. Minister Flanagan will join heads of state and senior ministers from UN Member States in Marrakech.
The Minister said: “Migration is a global issue that requires global solutions. The lessons we have learned in the European Union during the 2015 migration crisis should serve to remind us of the need to address migration in a cooperative and comprehensive manner. The UN’s Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration provides us all with a strong framework for cooperation as we together strive to address challenges.”
The Minister added “The Global Compact is legally non-binding, and places national sovereignty at its centre. The Global Compact represents a balanced approach for cooperation on migration between countries and regions, which have very different perspectives on and experiences of migration. I am delighted to join with so many Heads of State and fellow Ministers in Marrakech to speak on behalf of Ireland and ensure we can play our part in helping ensure that migration can be safer, more orderly and better managed.”

The Global Compact for Migration is the first-ever UN global agreement on a common approach to international migration in all its dimensions. The Compact is non-legally binding. It is grounded in values of state sovereignty, responsibility sharing, non-discrimination, and human rights, and recognizes that a cooperative approach is needed to optimize the overall benefits of migration, while addressing its risks and challenges for individuals and communities in countries of origin, transit and destination.
The High Level Inter-Governmental Conference to Adopt the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration is taking place in Marrakech on 10-11 December, 2018.
The Compact will be agreed by over 180 UN Member States
