Statement by the Minister for Justice and Equality, Charlie Flanagan TD, on the death of Peter Sutherland

The Minister for Justice and Equality, Charlie Flanagan TD, has paid
tribute to the late Peter Sutherland and expressed his condolences to the
Sutherland family.

Speaking today, Minister Flanagan said:

“I have known Peter Sutherland for many decades and have borne witness to
his vast capabilities in myriad roles. Most recently, when Minister for
Foreign Affairs and Trade, I met Peter on a number of occasions to discuss
the migration crisis. He displayed immense passion and compassion as the UN
SG’s Special Envoy on Migration and, despite ill health, he worked
tirelessly in his final years to address the plight of displaced people.

“Peter was dedicated to his family and I extend my sincere condolences to
Maruja, Shane, Natalia and Ian, his wider family and his wide circle of
friends around the world.

“Peter will be remembered by history as one of the greatest ever Irishmen.
Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.”
