Ireland has published its Long-Term Renovation Strategy 2020 and submitted it to the European Commission as required under the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (2018/844/EU) (Recast) https://ec.europa.eu/energy/topics/energy-efficiency/energy-efficient-buildings/energy-performance-buildings-directive_en.

The Long-Term Renovation Strategy 2020 includes the policies and measures currently in place or in development to encourage and support the renovation of the national building stock to ensure Ireland has a highly energy-efficient and decarbonised building stock by 2050.

The Programme for Government commits to an average 7% per annum reduction in overall greenhouse gas emissions from 2021 to 2030 (a 51% reduction over the decade) and to achieving net zero emissions by 2050.  This will require a significant increase in the level and depth of building retrofits that will be carried out. In order to support this increase, further policies and measures will need to be developed.

Given the significant increase in ambition set out in the Programme for Government and the policies and measures that will be developed to support its achievement, it is intended to update the Long-Term Renovation Strategy in line with future updates of the Climate Action Plan and National Energy & Climate Plan.  The outcome of this public consultation will feed into those updates.

The Department of the Environment, Climate and Communications is now seeking views on the Long-Term Renovation Strategy (LTRS) to inform that future policy development.
