Taoiseach congratulates Team Ireland on European Championships
The Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar, has congratulated Rhys McClenaghan on securing a gold in the pommel horse on the final day of the European Championships.
The Taoiseach said:
This is a career defining moment for Rhys. Winning a gold medal at European level is a huge achievement for any athlete, made all the more impressive considering Rhys is just 19 years old.
I would like to warmly congratulate Rhys, and the four other Irish athletes who will be bringing home medals from Glasgow; the O’Donovan brothers, Thomas Barr and Shane Ryan. Following on from the success of the Irish women’s Hockey team at the World Cup, their achievements have made this a fantastic summer for Irish sport.
