Statement from Minister Mitchell O’Connor following the announcement that UL President Dr Des Fitzgerald is to retire

During his tenure as President of the University of Limerick, Dr Fitzgerald has played an instrumental role in its navigation through some challenging periods.

With his wealth of experience from across the higher education and research sectors, including roles at the University College Dublin and the Royal College of Surgeons, Dr Fitzgerald’s contribution in leading the development and progression of the University of Limerick is to be commended.

I am sorry to hear of Dr Fitzgerald’s retirement, particularly as it comes as a result of COVID-19, however, I thank him most sincerely for his sterling work and unwavering commitment to higher education and I wish him and his family continued health and happiness.
