Record employment levels for two Government Agencies

Two Government agencies which are key to the Government's job creation agenda this week reported record employment results for 2015 as they released their Year in Review reports.

Enterprise Ireland supported companies created record 21,000 new jobs in 2015, with total employment in this companies now standing at 192,223 - a record high for the agency. 

Meanwhile, IDA Ireland announced the highest level of employment in its client companies in its 67 year history. Total employment at overseas companies now stands at 187,056 people, the highest level on record.

Job Creation

IDA supported companies created almost 19,000 jobs in 2015

Net jobs created amounted to 11,833 compared to 7,131 in the same period last year – a year on year rise of 66%. Additionally, every region of the country experienced growth.

53% of the new jobs created by IDA Ireland were located outside Dublin – a 4% increase on 2014.

Enterprise Ireland supported companies created a record 21,000 new jobs in 2015

The 21,118 new jobs created marked a net increase of 10,169 jobs for 2015. Almost two thirds of these new positions – 64% - were created outside Dublin with Agri, Technology and Business Process sectors being the key performers.

Funding and Investment

Some key investments secured during 2015 were:

  • Facebook planning to construct a new data centre in Clonee, Co Meath.
  • Apple making a €850 million investment in Athenry, Galway with 300 jobs in multiple phases
  • Pramerica is expanding its operation in Donegal creating 330 new jobs over three years. The company is building a new, state-of-the-art, eco-friendly office campus near its current location in Letterkenny, County Donegal to accommodate the expansion
  • Agora Publishing is setting up a multilingual contact centre in Portlaw in Waterford, adding 100 jobs
  • Medical devices company Zimmer investing €51m in Oranmore, Galway creating 250 jobs

 Regional Jobs Plans  

During 2015, a number of Regional Jobs Plans were published by the Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation.  IDA played a major role in formulating these strategies and they will further boost IDA’s ability to secure investments in regional locations.

What's the difference between Enterprise Ireland & IDA?

Enterprise Ireland is responsible for the development and growth of Irish businesses and start-up internationally. The team in Enterprise Ireland, led by Julie Sinnamon, work in partnership with Irish businesses to help them start, grow, innovate and win export sales in global markets. Enterprise Ireland offer funding supports, and provide supports to develop competitiveness in international markets. They also provide assistance in exporting assistance, and access to a global network of contacts.

IDA Ireland promotes and develops Foreign Direct Investment in Ireland. The Government agency, led by Martin Shanahan, provides a range of support and services to help foreign companies quickly establish and develop their operations in Ireland. These services include introducing foreign companies to other FDI companies, and facilitating site visits to property locations, banks and regulators.  They provide advice on financial incentives, funding and grants available to those considering foreign direct investment in Ireland and award funding and grants on a case by case basis. 

Useful Statistics

  • IDA estimates that for every 10 jobs generated by Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), another 7 are generated in the wider economy
  • IDA clients exported, based on preliminary estimates, approximately €129bn in 2014.
  • IDA client companies are significant contributors to Ireland’s corporation tax receipts, amounting to approximately 65% of all receipts in 2014
  • 192,223 people are employed by Enterprise Ireland supported Irish companies
