The Tánaiste today announced consular arrangements for Irish fans travelling to Poland for Ireland’s Group C games in the Euro 2012 championship.
Consular Officers will be on duty 24 hours a day in Poznan and Gdansk from 9 – 19 June to assist Irish citizens making the trip to Poland to support the team. The numbers to call in case of a consular emergency are Poznan: 00 48 880 529 105 / Gdansk: 00 48 880 529 078. The Embassy of Ireland in Warsaw will also be open throughout the period of the group games including from 9am to 5pm both weekends 9/10 June and 16/17 June.
When asked how fans can stay safe and avoid needing consular assistance in Poland, the Tánaiste said:
“Anyone travelling to Poland should be aware that a valid passport is essential for entry to the country, whether by air, land or sea. I would encourage all those travelling to make a copy of the details page of their passport and carry this with them separately, or email it to themselves; this can be of great assistance in the event of documents being lost or stolen.
Travel insurance is vital in case of serious accident or illness as the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade cannot provide funds for medical costs, repatriation or other expenses which may arise. The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) should also be acquired - this entitles the holder to free emergency health care throughout the EU.
Extreme caution should be taken on the roads in Poland. During the May Bank Holiday weekend this year there were 65 people killed on the roads and 1,218 injured.
Border controls at road and rail borders are to be reintroduced for the duration of Euro 2012. Those driving to Poland should expect delays, which could be lengthy, and allow plenty of time to get to matches. Remember to bring some Polish currency (zloty) with you if you plan to use the tolled motorways in Poland.”
He wished the best of luck to the Republic of Ireland team and urged the fans travelling for the matches to enjoy the Championship and stay safe.
