The Minister of State at the Department of Defence, Mr. Paul Kehoe, T.D., today (Thursday 23 January 2014) attended the Commissioning Ceremony of the 89th Army Cadet Class at the Defence Forces Training Centre in the Curragh Camp, County Kildare.

The Minister was welcomed to the Camp by the Chief of Staff, Lieutenant General Conor O’Boyle.

Addressing the 21 newly commissioned Permanent Defence Force officers, the Minister said “You are charged with providing leadership and guidance to others, a responsibility, I have no doubt you will all discharge with excellence. As officers of the Defence Forces, each of you has chosen a very challenging and demanding career; but one that is also very fulfilling and rewarding.” The Minister having paid tribute to the dedication and commitment of the members of the Cadet School also paid tribute the families and friends of the members of the 89th Cadet Class for their essential support and encouragement.

It is the Government’s intention that targeted recruitment will continue within the resource envelope allocated to Defence. A new General Service recruitment competition is planned to be run in the first half of this year. The question of a Cadet competition in 2014 will be considered in the context of the operational requirements of the Permanent Defence Force.
