Minister Kehoe Commends Captain and Crew of LE Samuel Beckett for their role in the Mediterranean Today

Minister Kehoe today commended the Captain and crew of LE Samuel Beckett for the excellent role that they have played in undertaking search and rescue activity in the Mediterranean today.  LÉ Samuel Beckett rescued a total of 269 migrants from two rubber vessels earlier today.  Unfortunately three bodies have also been recovered as part of the rescue operation.

The Minister was speaking following the first ceremony to present the 1916 Centenary Commemorative Medal to serving members of the Defence Forces, which took place in Dublin Castle this morning.

The 1916 Medal highlights the Government’s appreciation of the excellent work undertaken by the men and women of Óglaigh na hÉireann, while at home and overseas, and their commitment to excellence which is the hallmark of our Defence Forces.

Minister Kehoe stated "Today's search and rescue mission in the Mediterranean serves as a timely reminder of the often very challenging circumstances that members of the Defence Forces participate in on behalf of us all.

"I would like to extend my gratitude to the Captain and crew of LÉ Samuel Beckett for their ongoing dedication to this humanitarian mission and to commend in particular their role today in challenging tragic circumstances.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with those who have lost their lives, their families and the crew of LÉ Samuel Beckett for whom this has been a difficult operation."
