Minister Paul Kehoe, T.D. Welcomes home L.É. Samuel Beckett to Cork

After a successful deployment to assist in the humanitarian crisis in the Mediterranean, the Irish Naval vessel L.É. Samuel Beckett returned today (Friday) to the Naval Base and Dockyard, Haulbowline in Cork.
L.É. Samuel Beckett was the sixth naval deployment to the Mediterranean to assist the Italian Authorities with the search and rescue mission. Since her deployment on 23 September 2016 L.É. Samuel Beckett has rescued over 3,000 people and unfortunately recovered 12 bodies.
Speaking in advance Minister Kehoe said “I am delighted to welcome home L.É. Samuel Beckett and her crew from their service with the humanitarian operation in the Mediterranean, under the leadership of Lieutenant Commander Darragh Kirwan.”
The Minister went on to say, “I am truly very proud of the role they have played in responding to this humanitarian crisis, on behalf of the Irish people.”
Irish participation in the humanitarian mission in 2015 and 2016, to date, has resulted in the rescue of over 15,600 migrants, which clearly demonstrates the value of Ireland’s involvement in this important humanitarian response.
The Minister went on to say “We got a snapshot earlier this week of the excellent work undertaken by the Defence Forces in the Mediterranean through the programme “The Crossing”. I wish to express my appreciation and that of the Government for the very valuable work undertaken by the Defence Forces in what was clearly challenging circumstances.”
The Minister added “ I know that you have been looking forward to spending some well deserved time off with friends and family. I wish all of you a very Happy Christmas and a Peaceful New Year.”
