The Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Eamon Gilmore, TD, has expressed concern at the Thai army’s assumption of power and urged Irish people travelling in Thailand to exercise caution.

The Tánaiste said: “I am extremely concerned by developments in Thailand and the decision of the Thai army to take control of the country. I call on the military to respect the constitutional authority of the civilian government and to uphold international human rights standards, including media freedom. It is imperative that a timetable for elections is established as soon as possible in order for Thailand to return to democratic governance.

“Our Embassy in Kuala Lumpur, which has responsibility for Thailand, is in close contact with Ireland’s Honorary Consulates in Bangkok and Phuket, which remain open and functioning.

“While the army has assured the safety of foreigners in Thailand, Irish citizens should be sure to avoid any demonstrations, protests, or security operations. There is a risk of violent reaction to the military’s announcement. Stay alert to the situation, and if you feel your safety is at risk, remain in your accommodation.

“I would recommend that any Irish citizens currently in Thailand or travelling there should register with my Department on our website www.dfa.ie, Those considering travelling to Thailand should check the travel advice on the website which is updated regularly. Irish citizens in Thailand should exercise extreme caution, respect the curfew and closely monitor developments via media and social media.”
