Taoiseach Leo Varadkar visits Tallinn today where he is attending the informal Digital Summit, a centrepiece of the current Estonian EU Presidency.

Last night the Taoiseach attended a dinner, chaired by the President of the European Council, Donald Tusk, with a number of other European leaders. The leaders discussed a number of key issues concerning the future of the EU, including migration, security and improving the functioning of the Economic and Monetary Union.

During the dinner the Taoiseach underlined Ireland’s continuing commitment to the European Union, and the importance of our membership for the country and for our economy. He also said he wanted to see progress made in areas that can have the most positive impact on citizens and enterprises, including measures to drive forward the Digital Single Market, improving access for consumers and making it easier for businesses to work across borders.

Today at the Digital Summit the focus will be on four key areas - cyber-security; extending the range of Government services provided online; making the most of the economic opportunities provided by the digital revolution; and ensuring that Europe’s workers are equipped with the right skills for the jobs of tomorrow.

The Taoiseach said:

I will be highlighting some of the steps Ireland has already taken in these areas, including the e-Government Strategy 2017-2020. Ireland will also be supporting measures to unlock the full potential of the Digital Single Market in a manner that supports investment, innovation and entrepreneurship.
