Possible flooding in Dublin & Cork Cities tomorrow

Dublin City Council have notified the Department of the Environment of the possibility of local flooding due to high tides tomorrow. The situation will be managed & monitored closely by DCC.

This tide is predicted to be in the top 5/6 high tides recorded for Dublin with the tide level predicted to be 2.6m which is a level that triggers a flood warning. 2.7m would generate a severe flood warning so this event is at the threshold. The tide will peak at 12:00-12:15 tomorrow. The main threat of overtopping is from wave action; the main sea level should not cause flooding. DCC are taking the actions listed below.

It should be noted that this type of flooding should it occur could impact on the Custom House.

Tomorrow’s high tide is predicted to be extremely high and above Dublin City Council’s Tide Alert levels. Following a meeting of the City Council’s Flooding Assessment Group the following precautionary actions are being taken:

• The car parks at Sandymount promenade and at Clontarf are being closed today.

• A limited number of large sandbags are being put in place in Clontarf.

• The flood gates on the River Dodder will be closed tomorrow for the weekend.

• The flood defences on the River Tolka are being put in place.

• The Liffey Boardwalk defences will be closed on Friday morning.

• Spencer Dock Flood gates have been closed.

Dublin City Council maintains a stock of sandbags at various locations for strategic purposes and will be deployed by Drainage staff, if required in both Sandymount and Clontarf.

Cork City Council have also issued a flood warning for tomorrow. The local authority will manage and monitor the situation locally.

Cork City Council has advised home and business owners to take steps to protect their properties, after issuing a flood warning for parts of the city centre over the next four days.

There is a risk of flooding in the city centre at high tide this evening at around 7pm and the risk is said to be greatest at high tide tomorrow morning.

A number of factors are expected to combine to cause tidal flooding on several streets.

These include a high tide, a low pressure area, heavy rain and southeasterly winds.

High tide in Cork city will be at 5.50am tomorrow.

Met Éireann says it expects rainfall of around 25mm between 5pm this evening and 9am tomorrow.

Southeasterly winds, which are a contributory factor to flooding in Cork city, are expected to reach gale force. A tidal surge is also expected to result in flood water on a number of streets.

It is not known at this stage if flood waters will rise to the extent that buildings will be flooded too.

Cork City Council says the areas at risk of flooding include South Terrace, Trinity Bridge, Georges Quay, Cotter Street, Stable Lane, Union Quay, Morrisons Quay, Proby's Quay, French's Quay, Crosses Green, Sharman Crawford Street, Wandesford Quay, Lavitts Quay, Kyrl's Street and Kyrl's Quay, Coal Quay, South Mall, Oliver Plunkett Street, Pembroke Street, Prince's Street, Marlborough Street, Cook Street, Winthrop Street, Kennedy Quay, Centre Park Road and Monahan Road.

Separately, Cork County Council has warned that very high spring tides may cause flooding in coastal parts of the county at times between now and next Tuesday.
