Minister Sherlock presents awards to the winners of the Cork Schools Science Awards

The Minister of State for Research and Innovation, Seán Sherlock TD, today attended the Cork Schools Science Awards ceremony in the Blackrock Castle Observatory.

The Awards were created to publicly acknowledge and honour the Cork City and County students who obtained the highest marks in the science subjects at Leaving Certificate.

Presenting the awards, Minister Sherlock noted: "This is the 24th presentation of the gold medal awards scheme which was initiated by the Cork Scientific Council more than fifty years ago.

"Cork has attracted some of the world’s leading pharmaceutical companies; indeed eight of the top ten global pharmaceutical companies are located in Ireland. This is testament to our education system and the quality of graduates we produce.

“With the individuals that I see before me, I have no doubt that this region will continue to provide the necessary quality and talent required by such global companies."

Acknowledging the invaluable support of their families and teachers, the Minister congratulated all of the award recipients and wished them the very best in their future careers.

He praised the Cork School Science Awards Committee and concluded by recognising the generous sponsorship of BASF Ireland Ltd., Eli Lilly SA, GlaxoSmithKline, Schering-Plough (Brinny) Co., and the School of Mathematical Sciences, UCC.
