Minister Michael Creed TD, Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine ,today announced that following proposals made by the National Inshore Fisheries Forum, he has commenced two public consultations to allow stakeholders the chance to express their views on the proposals.

Razor Clam in North Irish Sea

This proposal is to increase the minimum conservation reference size for razor clams in the North Irish Sea. The change, if implemented would require that only Razor Clams with a minimum size of 125mm could be landed. Currently any razor clams over 100mm may be landed.

The proposal was put forward by the North Irish Sea Razor Fishermen’s Association through the North East Regional Inshore Fisheries Forum. The National Inshore Fisheries Forum recommended the proposal to the Minister for consideration.

Brown Crab

This proposal is to increase the minimum conservation reference size for brown crab. The change, if implemented would require that only brown crab with a minimum size of 140mm could be landed. Currently any brown crab over 130mm may be landed.

The proposal was put forward by the members of the fishing industry through the South East Regional Inshore Fisheries Forum. The National Inshore Fisheries Forum recommended the proposal to the Minister for consideration.
