The Minister for Business, Enterprise and Innovation Heather Humphreys T.D. is advising businesses and employees to heed the updates that will be issued by the Government’s National Emergency Coordination Group in the coming days following severe weather warnings from Met Éireann.
“We are facing an extraordinary weather event in parts of the country over the coming days. Red Alerts are rare and serious occurrences, which should not be taken lightly.
“The most important thing for everyone at this time - Government, citizens and employers - is safety. This is the paramount and overriding concern for everyone,” the Minister said.
“Ultimately it is up to each business in affected areas to decide whether they will stay open or close. However, when making their decision, I would encourage employers to consider the constraints on public transport and the current and anticipated snow conditions in their local area,” the Minister continued.
“It is not possible to issue blanket advice about whether a business should close in the event of a Status Red Warning from Met Éireann, because many organisations are engaged in the delivery of essential services.
“My Department has, however, prepared a checklist for businesses to help them consider the broad range of implications arising from a severe weather event. This is available on www.dbei.gov.ie”, the Minister added.
“I would ask employers to recognise that demonstrating concern for the welfare of employees and treating employees fairly translates into a better working environment to the benefit of both the staff and the employer,” she concluded.
