Minister of State with special responsibility for disabilities, Finian McGrath TD, today marked International Day of Persons with Disabilities.

Since 1992, 3rd December has been annually observed as the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. The theme of this year's day is “Empowering persons with disabilities and ensuring inclusiveness and equality”.

“The theme of the day is in keeping with the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities”, the Minister said. “Ratification was a key commitment in the Programme for Government and I was pleased to be able to deliver on that commitment earlier this year”, he added.

The day of celebration is being marked by the colour purple and many public buildings and landmarks will turn purple today. Minister McGrath will celebrate the day by attending events in the Central Remedial Clinic in Firhouse where he will launch a purple ribbon to mark the day as well as attending events in Dublin City University and Trinity College.

“Today is a fantastic day and I encourage everyone to get involved and salute the day in purple pride”, the Minister said.
