Minister Naughten appoints Mr Geoffrey Meagher as new Chairperson of Bord na Móna

Minister for Communications, Climate Action and Environment, Mr Denis Naughten, T.D., has appointed Mr Geoffrey Meagher as Director and Chairperson Designate of the Board of Bord na Móna for a period of five years with immediate effect.

Bord na Móna is a majority State owned company which operates in the power generation, fuel supply, peat production, horticulture supply, biomass supply and resource recovery industries throughout Ireland, particularly the Midlands. The company is undergoing significant transformational change as it continues to diversify from its core business of peat harvesting.

Announcing the appointment Minister Naughten said: "I am pleased that Mr Geoffrey Meagher has accepted my invitation to become Director and Chairperson Designate of the Board of Bord na Móna. Geoffrey brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the position combined with an appreciation of the future role Bord na Móna must embrace to support economic and social development in rural areas, especially across the Midlands. Under his leadership, I am confident that Bord na Móna will continue to meet the challenges of the changing environment in which it operates.”

Minister Naughten added the appointment was made following a competitive selection process conducted by the Public Appointments Service (PAS) on www.stateboards.ie.

Arrangements will be made for Mr Meagher to appear before the Oireachtas Committee on Communications, Climate Action and Environment in line with revised Government procedures for proposed Chairpersons of State Boards.

He is a Certified Public Accountant with over thirty years’ experience at senior management level in Irish and international entities across various sectors including Glanbia plc, PwC and Kilkenny Engineering Products.
