Minister for Health Simon Harris hosts All-Island Civic Dialogue on the implications of Brexit for Cross-border Health Co-operation

Minister for Health Simon Harris TD today (Friday) hosted an All-Island Civic Dialogue on the implications of Brexit for Cross-border Health Co-operation. The stakeholder consultation event was held in Dundalk.

This event is part of the All Island Civic Dialogue process, established by the Government, to facilitate the widest possible conversation on the challenges presented by Brexit and how these might impact on different elements of society on an all-island basis.

Stakeholders concerned with all-island health matters gathered to discuss the potential impact of Brexit on the health sector, particularly cross-border health co-operation. Contributions made at the event will help to inform and deepen the understanding of the implications of Brexit in respect of health across the island of Ireland.

Speaking at the event, Minister Harris reaffirmed his commitment to cross-border health co-operation. He said “Brexit undoubtedly poses challenges for the health sector, but I have no doubt that the strength and maturity of the networks and relationships that have built up over time will be of great benefit as we seek to manage the implications of Brexit collectively on an all-island basis. We will ensure that cross-border health co-operation continues because it is in the best interests of patients North and South.”

The Minister said “The key priorities of my Department in addressing the implications of Brexit are to ensure continuity of health services and to avoid any changes to the current situation that would have a negative impact on health. I am very pleased to see participants from both sides of the border come to give their views today. Ongoing stakeholder consultation is very important, as is ongoing negotiation. That is why that Ireland is negotiating as part of the EU27 and I am engaging with my EU counterparts. I am also engaging with my ministerial colleagues in the UK on ongoing co-operation and matters of interest in the area of health.”
