Minister of State, Helen McEntee congratulates winners of the Irish Aid Science for Development Award at BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition 2020

This morning, Minister of State, Helen McEntee, T.D., visited the BT Young Scientists Exhibition at the RDS. Minister McEntee also visited a number of entries with a Science for Development focus from students from across Ireland. Minister McEntee said:

I was so impressed by the quality of the projects I saw.  They demonstrate the creativity, ingenuity and innovative capacity of our youth.  Their work will help address global challenges, in particular, those faced by developing countries as a result of climate change.

I was also really encouraged by my conversation with the winners of the Young Scientist Kenya competition. Part of their prize is to come to visit the Young Scientist Exhibition in Ireland.  This allows them to take home the ideas and contacts from Ireland and it also enriches the experience of our students who have been visiting their exhibition stand.

Each year, Irish Aid, the Government’s international development programme, awards a bursary to the best Young Scientist research project with an international focus.  This year, students from St. Joseph’s Secondary School in Co. Meath won this special category award for their project on ethical period products for women in developing countries.

Minister McEntee said:

I am delighted to congratulate Sophie McElligott and Salome Maher Bordalo on their excellent project, this year’s winner of the Science for Development Award.  I also acknowledge all the other students who have produced really impressive projects which relate to global development
