Minister of State Seán Kyne approves a grant of €753,350 for the carrying out of capital works on a number of the country's islands

The Minister of State for the Irish Language, the Gaeltacht and the Islands, Seán Kyne TD, has today announced that he has approved a grant totalling €753,350 to complete improvement works on a number of the country's coastal islands.  The grants have been awarded to Cork County Council, Mayo County Council, Donegal County Council and Galway County Council and are allocated as follows:

Donegal County Council

€110,625

Galway County Council

€97,500


The islands are Whiddy Island, Bear Island, Inishodriscol or Hare Island and Sherkin Island in County Cork, Inis Bigil, Clare Island and Inishturk in County Mayo, Oileán an Bhráighe, Árainn Mhór and Gabhla in County Donegal and Inis Mór in County Galway.

Minister of State Kyne has said he is very pleased to make this announcement. The Minister said.

Today's announcement regarding the provision of assistance towards implementing minor works on the islands shows that the Government is committed to providing resources in order to improve infrastructure on the islands when those resources are available.

He also announced that the ferry and bus service to Inis Bigil, which has been in effect since the beginning of this month, has been extended by 6 months, after which a long-term contract will be implemented.

This follows Minister of State Kyne's decision to establish an Interdepartmental Committee on Island Development.
