Ministers Ross and Griffin congratulate Irish team on their performances at the U20 World Athletics Championships

The Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Shane Ross, TD, and the Minister with responsibility for Sport, Brendan Griffin, TD, today congratulated the Irish team on their success at the IAAF World U20 Athletics Championships in Tampere, Finland.

Minister Ross said: “On behalf of the Irish people I am delighted to congratulate you, the Irish team on your fantastic performances at the World U20 Athletics Championships in FinlandComing hot on the heels of great success at the U18 European Championships, these medal wins are very encouraging for our future prospects at senior and Olympic level. I would like to commend in particular Sommer Lecky, who won a silver medal in the High Jump event, and our Women’s 4 x 100m Relay Team who also achieved a silver medal. I would also like to applaud the wonderful work of the individual coaches and Athletics Ireland in nurturing the talents our young athletes who are enjoying great success in international competition. It certainly bodes well for the future.”

Minister Griffin said: "I warmly commend each of the Irish team on their impressive performances in Tampere. These performance and the recent  great successes at the U18 European Championships, are very important and encouraging as we look to build for further success at senior and Olympic level. These are indeed exciting times for Irish athletics and the achievements at these Championships will provide encouragement and inspiration to many young athletes throughout Ireland who aspire to represent our country. I would like to wish all of our athletes the best in the future."
