Ministers Ross and Griffin congratulate Pádraig Harrington on being named as Europe's captain for the 2020 Ryder Cup

The Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Shane Ross, TD, and the Minister with responsibility for Sport, Brendan Griffin, TD, today congratulated Pádraig Harrington on being named as Europe's captain for the 2020 Ryder Cup.
Minister Ross said: “I am delighted to congratulate Pádraig on being named as Europe’s captain for the 2020 Ryder Cup in Wisconsin.
This is a wonderful honour for Pádraig and his family and I know that he possesses all the qualities needed for the enormous task that lies ahead. Pádraig will be the third Irish captain in the past four Ryder Cups following on from Paul McGinley in 2014 and Darren Clarke in 2016. His appointment as captain for 2020 is another great endorsement for Irish golf.”

Minister Ross added: “Pádraig is a magnificent sporting ambassador for Ireland and I have no doubt that he will do a fantastic job as captain.”
Minister Griffin said: "It is a fabulous achievement for Pádraig to be chosen as Europe’s captain for the 2020 Ryder Cup.
Pádraig is an ideal choice as captain having served as a vice-captain at the last three Ryder Cups and being on the winning team as a player in 2002, 2004, 2006, and 2010. He is also a three-time major winner and his experience of the course in Wisconsin will be of great benefit to him next year having played there in three US PGA Championships.”
