Ministers Ross and Griffin congratulate Rhys McClenaghan on bronze medal win

The Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Mr. Shane Ross, TD, and the Minister of State with responsibility for Sport, Mr. Brendan Griffin, TD, today congratulated Irish gymnast Rhys McClenaghan on his bronze medal win at the 2019 FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Championships in Stuttgart.

Minister Ross said:

I am delighted to congratulate Rhys McClenaghan on his fantastic achievement in winning bronze in the Men’s Pommel-Horse Final at the World Championships in Stuttgart. Rhys’ performance today must be all the more satisfying after a shoulder injury cost him any chance of a medal at last year’s Championships. Rhys is an inspiration to many young gymnasts throughout Ireland who aspire to represent their country. I would like to wish him continued success in the future and I look forward to seeing him compete at the highest level for many years to come.

Minister Griffin said:

I would like to congratulate Rhys on a brilliant bronze medal win in the pommel-horse final at today’s World Championships. Rhys is the first ever Irish gymnast to compete in a world final and to come away with a bronze in such a highly competitive field is a remarkable achievement for him and a deservedly proud one. It is just reward for all the hard work, commitment and dedication he has shown to his sport for so many years and a wonderful boost to the sport in Ireland and to the world class facilities in the Sport Ireland Campus where he is based.
