Ministers applaud Republic of Ireland soccer team on valiant effort to qualify for 2018 World Cup

Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Shane Ross TD and Minister of State for Tourism and Sport, Brendan Griffin TD, tonight applauded the Republic of Ireland soccer team on their valiant effort to qualify for the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

Minister Ross said: "On behalf of the Irish people I would like to commiserate with the Republic of Ireland soccer team on the outcome of tonight’s play-off against Denmark. While the team and the Irish supporters are understandably downhearted with tonight’s result, I want to applaud the team on their well fought campaign. I would also like to wish the players and management team all the best in qualifying for UEFA EURO 2020, the draw for which will take place in Dublin in December next year. And of course, hats off to the Irish fans who, as always, conducted themselves with humour and good grace throughout the qualifiers. We are lucky to have such wonderful sporting ambassadors.”

Minister Griffin added that "While naturally we are all disappointed, it is important to acknowledge the very creditable achievement for a small nation to come so close to qualifying for the finals of this global competition. Martin, Roy and all the team once again showed a great fighting spirit throughout the qualifiers and in the play-offs against Denmark and you did yourselves, your families and the whole country proud. We will continue to support our National team with fervour and we thank them for representing Ireland so well”.
