Ministers express sympathy on the passing of Jimmy Magee

The Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport Shane Ross TD, and Minister of State for Tourism and Sport Brendan Griffin TD, this morning expressed their sympathy at the sad passing of the legendary sports broadcaster Jimmy Magee.

Minister Ross said “Jimmy was the voice of Irish sport for many decades and his passing will be mourned by people the length and breadth of the land. His passion for sport and warm interest in people, and his ability to express both was central to the immense affection felt for him, both in Ireland and also abroad, particularly amongst the Irish Diaspora.  His great knowledge of sport was epitomised by the name of Memory Man with which he was so associated over the years. I would like to extend my deepest sympathies to Jimmy’s family and many friends. ”

Minister Griffin also expressed his condolences, "Jimmy was known as the Memory Man for his great sporting knowledge, but he has also left many generations of Irish sports fans with so many fond sporting memories of their own through his commentary. He is synonymous with countless Irish golden sporting moments and had a unique ability to make the viewer or listener feel part of the event. He will be sadly missed by sports fans throughout the country, but generations to come will continue to enjoy his contribution through the rich archive of sporting history that he is forever an integral part of. I want to offer my condolences to all of Jimmy's family and friends at this sad time. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam."
