Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Shane Ross TD and Minister of State for Tourism and Sport, Brendan Griffin TD, today wished the Irish Women’s Rugby team well as the Rugby World Cup Tournament kicks off in Ireland.

Speaking today Minister Ross said: “I want to wish the squad, the management and all the backroom staff every success as they begin their journey. We are all excited to be hosting this tournament, there is huge support as evidenced by the sold out games and I know the squad will want to get off to a good start against Australia. Losing Niamh is, of course, a big disappointment, but the management and squad have prepared very well, and I am drawn to the quote: “Champions do not become champions when they win the event, but in the hours, weeks, months they spend preparing for it. The victorious performance itself is merely the demonstration of their championship character.” As Minister for Tourism I’m also delighted to welcome our rugby sports tourists to our shores. We hope you enjoy the event and return again soon.”

Minister Griffin added: “As the tournament kicks off we look forward to a wonderful and vibrant tournament across the island of Ireland, and we hope all the participants and visitors enjoy the full experience of such a fantastic tournament. I also want to wish the Irish management team, backroom staff and the squad every success on the field and hopefully they can build on their last showing in 2014. I know they put in a huge amount of work and the whole country will be with them all the way win lose or draw. Also I want to thank the many dedicated volunteers who I am sure over the next number of weeks will contribute to a massively successful tournament.”
