Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Jimmy Deenihan, announces the allocation of over €700,000 to a fund providing for the conservation and preservation of heritage structures of national importance in public ownership.

The fund is intended to assist with works to safeguard structures protected under the Planning and Development Act 2000, as amended, or to sites/monuments protected under the National Monuments Acts 1930 - 2004. The Minister announced that the fund is intended to assist with conservation work to structures or groups of structures deemed to be of significant special interest. The funding will be allocated on a project basis and the Minister expects to fund works to approximately ten historic structures in 2014.

Minister Deenihan commented: “In allocating this fund, I am seeking to ensure that the funding that is available for historic structures in public ownership is appropriately targeted where it is most needed and can be most effective.”

Monies from this fund will only be available for works to structures in the ownership or under the management of local authorities or under the management of the Office of Public Works (OPW).
