Launch of rtol.ie builds on successful motortax.ie website which has processed 17M online tax renewals to date

Minister for Transport, Tourism & Sport Leo Varadkar has formally launched the next stage of the Government’s online services – the new road transport operator’s licence website rtol.ie.

This new rtol.ie website allows road haulage and road passenger transport operators to apply for - and manage - their licences online. It’s one of the Minister’s key priorities for 2014 and is in line with the eGovernment and Public Service Reform plans.

The launch of rtol.ie follows the Department’s hugely successful motortax.ie website. Motortax.ie is currently processing around 265,000 tax discs every month, for a whole range of vehicles. Almost 70% of all motor tax renewals are now done online, compared to just 20% in 2004. And since the launch of motortax.ie, a total of 17 million tax discs have been issued online.

In line with a key principle of eGovernment, the new rtol.ie facility allows transport operators to apply for licences at their own convenience. The website also offers a search facility that allows members of the public to check whether a particular operator or vehicle is licensed.

As well as providing the new online application service, the Department has also created a National Electronic Register of Undertakings, in line with EU regulations. This will be linked with the European Register of Road Transport Undertakings to enable enhanced cooperation and communication between Member States, particularly with regard to the exchange of information about infringements by operators in other Member States.
