Youth Work Changes Lives National Showcase

I believe young voices should be the loudest when we are deciding the future of our nation. Today you are making your voices heard.
I can think of no better place for our young people to engage with politicians than here in the historic Mansion House – the birthplace of modern Irish democracy.
We gather to celebrate your creativity – but also to give you the chance to be heard.I am delighted that 38 youth organisations from every part of the country accepted my invitation to be here today. You represent one fifth of the population – more than 950-thousand people aged between 10 and 25-years old.
Now you have an important job and an opportunity to get their views across to my colleagues from Leinster House. Ministers, TDs and Senators will be visiting and want to hear how you see the future of your community, your county and our country.
They also want to get your opinion on big global issues. Brexit, migration and climate change are just some of the big challenges we face. As the up and coming generation you have a right to be heard!
I urge you to seize that right and to use your voice not just in the next few hours in the Mansion House, but when you go home, when you gather with your friends in youth clubs and in your community.
This event is also a showcase. The chance to show our leaders how young people across this country are using their talents and skills – not only to better themselves but also to be an active and positive part of the local community.
It is always an honour to see your work in action. In the past few weeks I have visited youth projects in the South East, in the Midlands and in the Mid-West.
I know the value of the work you do. I know the fun, adventure and sport you have by working together and supporting each other. It is an inspiration. This is work which deserves Government support. This year my office is investing €57m in youth work.
Today you are showing me – and everyone in Leinster House – that this is money well spent.
98-years ago the first Dáil gathered in this room. What is clear is that this venue which has a special part in Irish history is once again a room full of opinions, energy and passion.
Those politicians who set our country on the road to becoming a truly modern democracy – with equality, justice and fairness at its very heart – would be proud to see our gathering today.
I wish you well. I urge you to speak up and be heard. With that final thought I now have the great please to declare the Youth Work Changes Lives Showcase Open!
