The Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Mr Eamon Gilmore T.D., has condemned the growing humanitarian crisis in Syria and neighbouring countries.

Today marks the third anniversary of the start of the Syrian uprising. Speaking in Paris, where he discussed the crisis in Syria with the French Foreign Minister, Mr Laurent Fabius, the Tánaiste said:

"For three long years, the Syrian people have been subjected to the most appalling suffering as a result of a simple, peaceful demand for greater political and economic freedoms. I join with the many millions of others around the world today - three years on from that first protest march in Deraa - in calling for an end to the appalling bloodshed and violations of basic human rights. This conflict is destroying Syria and threatening the stability of its neighbours.

“The cowardly and cynical attacks on civilians and the incessant breaches of international law by those engaged in the conflict cannot continue. Those responsible must be held accountable. The United Nations Security Council must ensure that Resolution 2139 is fully complied with and that clear criteria are established to ensure that it is observed and implemented. Access must be granted without delay to those providing urgent humanitarian assistance.

“Only a negotiated outcome can bring an end to this conflict. I urge all sides to accept the proposals of Joint Special Representative Brahimi for the renewal of fully inclusive peace talks within the Geneva II framework.

“Ireland has already committed over €26 million in humanitarian relief to Syria since the beginning of this conflict. We will continue to assist the victims of this conflict through our work with the United Nations, Irish NGOs and our other partners. ”
