In accordance with Article 50 of the Treaty on European Union, the UK formally notified the European Council of the UK's intention to leave the EU on 29 March 2017. This means that the two-year exit process has now commenced.

Although we regret the UK's decision to leave the EU, it has been clear since the referendum last June that the British Government would follow this path. A more detailed negotiating mandate for the European Commission was agreed by the EU on 22 May, which can be accessed here.

Ireland has been preparing for Brexit for a long time. We are ready for what is ahead.
