Creighton highlights the unlocked potential of the European economy

Friday 3rd February 2012

Europe Minister Lucinda Creighton has today spoken about the potential to unlock growth in the European economy. Speaking at a meeting of European Ambassadors to Ireland, the Minister urged a renewed focus on growth and the completion of the Digital Single Market.

Minister Creighton said: “We look forward to working more with partners in capitals and institutions on priority actions for this year's twentieth anniversary of the Single Market programme.  A particular theme for us is progress in developing the full potential of the Digital Single Market, including establishing a European copyright regime that promotes innovation in the twenty-first century.”

“Let me give you a figure. The EU could gain 4% GDP by stimulating the fast development of Digital Single Market by 2020, corresponding to a gain of about €500 billion or more than €1,000 for every citizen. This illustrates the huge potential still to be unlocked.”
