Minister of State Eoghan Murphy is in Luxembourg today (18-July-2016) to undertake a round of meetings and engagements involving pressing EU matters. He will also take the opportunity to celebrate Ireland's vibrant ex-pat community and strong links with the Grand Duchy's financial services' sector.
Minister Murphy's itinerary will include bilateral meetings with the Luxembourg Finance Minister, with the President of the EIB, and the Irish Member of the European Court of Auditors, where the subjects of the UK’s vote to leave the EU and continued investment in vital infrastructure will be discussed.
Of particular interest to the Minister is to discuss emergent issues with expert EU authorities in the budgetary and investment spheres. Minister Murphy commented;
“Notwithstanding the risks and strains placed on the existing financial system by Brexit, there is a need for clear and reliable measures to determine the required levels of investment our economy needs.”
“We have to be prudent with current spending, particularly given events like Brexit. Indeed such events serve as a motivation, on all sides, to make the necessary infrastructure investments that will protect the economy in the coming years and provide the capacity to continue to grow.”
Minister Murphy will also undertake engagements to promote IDA Ireland interests and will discuss common challenges facing Europe with members of the Ireland-Luxembourg Chamber of Commerce. The Minister noted that:
“Our strong links with Luxembourg well reflect the strength of our commitment to the EU. Both our countries have greatly profited from the peace and prosperity that have underpinned our membership of the Union. Both our economies have modernised in proximity to the rise of London as the preeminent global financial centre and now, in very changed circumstances, we must work to achieve the best outcome for our Union and our economies.”
