Justice Minister's statement on dissolution of NI Commissions

In light of the completion of the work of the Independent International Commission on Decommissioning (IICD) and of the Independent Monitoring Commission (IMC), the Government has agreed with the British Government that the time is now right formally to dissolve the Commissions and the necessary arrangements have been put in place.  The Commissions will stand dissolved on 31 March.

As requested by the two Governments, the IICD and IMC have provided both Governments with reports on each Commission’s experience and lessons learned.  The reports are being considered and will be published after the Northern Ireland Assembly elections in May on a date to be agreed by both Governments.

The Minister for Justice and Law Reform, Mr. Alan Shatter TD, on behalf of the Government, would like to take this opportunity to thank the IICD and IMC Commissioners and Commission staff for their hard work over the last several years.  They have played a crucial part in supporting and enabling the historic changes of recent years, and in assisting in Northern Ireland's transition to a peaceful, stable and inclusive society.
