The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Charlie Flanagan, T.D., has welcomed the peaceful marking of this year’s Twelfth of July celebrations.

“This year’s Twelfth celebrations passed off in an overall atmosphere of mutual respect. I want to acknowledge the collective efforts of all who worked over the past number of months to achieve this success. I note in particular the efforts made in this regard by the Orange Order, the Parades Commission, the Police Service of Northern Ireland, political representatives and community leaders from both traditions.

"A number of homes suffered fire damage in Belfast on Monday night. My thoughts are with the people affected. This, together with burning of flags and election posters at certain bonfires, as well as the environmental damage caused by burning tyres, is a reminder of the need to for effective dialogue around bonfires – so that this important cultural expression can be enjoyed by all. The new Commission on Flags, Identity, Culture and Tradition, established following the Fresh Start and Stormont House Agreements, might wish to give some consideration to this particular aspect.”
