Half billion euro SSE investment to create 700 jobs - Taoiseach

Energy utility SSE plc today announced a half billion euro further investment in Ireland. The investment is expected to create 600 construction jobs up to 2014, with a further 100 recruited to the company over the coming year to support its expanding business, which includes:

  • Airtricity
  • Airtricity Utility Solutions
  • SSE Renewables
  • SSE Generation

Today's announcement follows the news that SSE plc has entered into an agreement with Endesa Generacion SA, to acquire Endesa Ireland Limited in an investment package totalling €488 million.

The investment will bring total employment at SSE's businesses in Ireland to over 900 full time employees.

Welcoming the announcement, Taoiseach Enda Kenny said:

I welcome today's investment announcement by SSE as a great vote of confidence in Ireland and our economy, and for the new jobs that will be created in the coming years. Secure energy supply is crucial for future investment and jobs and also presents other significant economic opportunities for Ireland, particularly in the export of renewable energy.

Gregor Alexander, Finance Director of SSE, spoke to MerrionStreet.ie at the announcement:
