Appointment of new Deputy Garda Commissioner

The Minister for Justice and Law Reform, Mr Alan Shatter TD, today announced that the Government has appointed Assistant Garda Commissioner Noirín O’Sullivan as a new Deputy Garda Commissioner.

This appointment fills the vacancy created when then Deputy Garda Commissioner Martin Callinan was appointed Garda Commissioner last December.

Making the announcement, Minister Shatter said: “I want to congratulate Noirín O’Sullivan on her appointment as Deputy Garda Commissioner, the first woman at this rank, and to wish her well in her new post.  She has a record of dedicated service in the Garda Síochána, and has served with distinction in a wide range of positions in the Force, most recently as Assistant Commissioner in charge of Crime and Security.  I know that she will bring formidable qualities of ability, experience and commitment to her new role of Deputy Garda Commissioner, and that she will be a major addition to top Garda management.”
