Ministers congratulate Ireland Men’s Rugby Sevens on Qualifying for 2020 World Rugby Sevens Series

The Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport Shane Ross, T.D. and the Minister of State with Special Responsibility for Tourism and Sport Brendan Griffin, T.D. today congratulated the Irish Men’s Rugby Sevens on their victory in the Hong Kong Rugby Sevens Qualifier Tournament and qualification for the 2020 World Rugby Sevens Series. 

Minister Ross said: “I would like to congratulate the team for their excellent performance in winning the World Rugby Sevens Series Qualifier Tournament and their victory over Hong Kong in the final. This team has come agonisingly close to achieving qualification over recent years, so it is fantastic to see them take their place at the highest level of international Sevens Rugby. I would like to commend the players and their coaching team led by Anthony Eddy and Stanley McDowell for their hard work and dedication to achieve this outstanding result.” 

Minister Griffin said: “I am absolutely thrilled for the Irish Men’s Rugby Sevens team to have qualified for next year’s World Rugby Sevens Series. We have seen a stratospheric rise for Sevens Rugby in Ireland over recent years, which is now an Olympic sport, and today’s result is a credit to the commitment of the IRFU, supported by Sport Ireland. I am confident that today’s result will have a very positive impact for the continued development our elite teams and in growing participation in Sevens Rugby in Ireland.”
