Minister Humphreys announces €600,000 in funding for Irish arts globally through Culture Ireland
The Minister for Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Heather Humphreys TD, has today (Tuesday) announced €600,000 in funding from Culture Ireland, which will allow 117 Irish artists and arts organisations to present their work worldwide in 2017 and 2018.
The projects, covering circus, dance, film, literature, music, theatre and the visual arts will enable Irish artists to present their work in 35 different countries and build on Ireland's strong global reputation for creativity.
Highlights include notable theatre productions such as Dead Centre’s Hamnet, Chekhov’s First Play and LIPPY in Holland, Georgia, Czech Republic, Italy and Russia from August through November 2017, Una McKevitt’s play “Alien Documentary” in Leeuwarden, Netherlands, European Capital of Culture 2018, in May 2018 and presentation of Cahoots NI “Shh! We have a plan” at venues across the USA and Canada also in May 2018.
Ireland’s exhibition, “Tremble Tremble”, by Jesse Jones at the 2017 Venice Art Biennale has secured international interest and will be shown at LASALLE’S Institute of Contemporary Arts, Singapore from early November 2017 to end January 2018 before travelling to Edinburgh for exhibition from October 2018. Other visual artists will reach a wide and focused audience through presentation by leading galleries at art fairs in Shanghai, Miami and Basel.
Speaking today Minister Humphreys said:
"The interest in Irish artists continues to grow and their presence around the world reinforces to global audiences the strength of Ireland's creativity. The focus on Ireland at the 20th Singapore Writers Festival this year is just one example of the deep enthusiasm for Ireland's artistic talent.
“This round of funding includes strong support for Irish musicians to tour in the US, Europe and Australia, including for example, young Dublin trio Hare Squead who are undertaking a European tour during October and November 2017, while leading uilleann pipers will perform at locations around the world including the United Kingdom, Argentina and Singapore to mark International Uilleann Piping Day on 4 November 2017.”
