Minister Rabbitte welcomes Eircom’s Next Generation Broadband announcement

The Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources, Pat Rabbitte T.D. has welcomed today’s announcement by Eircom that it is to make additional investment in the roll out of Next Generation Broadband. Welcoming the announcement, Minister Rabbitte stated: “The roll out of bigger broadband to more places as soon as possible is a priority objective for this Government. This announcement by Eircom is another step towards achieving that objective.

Noting that this initiative is expected to be followed by further significant investments, Minster Rabbitte welcomed the vote of confidence by the company in Ireland. The Minister said that “Ireland’s significant capacity to innovate its way through the current challenges has been further boosted by today’s announcement.

“The Government is committed to accelerating the roll-out of high speed broadband . the Next Generation Broadband Taskforce, which I chair and which comprises the CEOs of key telecoms companies, aims to chart a roadmap for delivery of the next generation access. Today’s announcement by Eircom, together with last Friday’s commitment to significantly improve wholesale arrangements are good news. These developments will help deliver competition for high speed services to consumers and boost the prospect that many more homes will be able to avail of high speed services.

The Minister looks forward to the full deployment of fibre based services to the million homes and premises to be targeted.
