Minister Rabbitte announces appointment of consultants to conduct an economic analysis of the Irish advertising market

The Minister for Communications, Pat Rabbitte T.D., today announced the appointment of Indecon (Ireland) to conduct an economic analysis of the advertising market in Ireland.

The review, which will inform the development of a revised regulatory framework for both public service and commercial broadcasters, was initiated by Government earlier this year, following the BAI’s 5 year review of public service broadcasting.

Announcing the outcome of the procurement process, the Minster noted that ‘the review will provide a comprehensive overview of the market, including an analysis of issues around pricing and competition and will provide for the introduction of a revised system for setting advertising minutage.”.

The outcome of the review will inform the Department’s approach to revising the governance arrangements for advertising minutage for all broadcasters, including measures to revise and strengthen the annual funding review process for Public Service Broadcasters RTÉ and TG4.

Note to Editors:

Advertising minutage is (a) the total daily time for broadcasting advertisements and (b) the maximum period given to advertisements in any hour.
