Minister Rabbitte launches landmark content distribution project in TG4

Major €690k capital project will enable TG4 to deliver content to multiple platforms.

Dublin, 16 December 2013

Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources, Mr Pat Rabbitte TD announced the commissioning of the TG4 Content Distribution Project, following a capital investment from his Department of €690k. This major capital project will enable TG4 to deliver content to multiple platforms, opening up opportunities to market TG4 content on a worldwide basis and in making it easier for audiences to find and access TG4.

TG4 will now be able to repurpose programme content for any platform, offering viewers greater choice and new functionality options across multiple devices. The Minister stated that “this project demonstrates TG4’s ability to keep pace with broadcast and content Technology Developments at a time of exponential change.”

He also noted that it will strengthen TG4’s competitive position and maximise the quality of its content across all platforms, with full HD capability through all stages of the work-flow. The project will also enable TG4 to adapt to any new transmission or distribution standards that may arise in the future.

Minister Rabbitte launched the project during a visit to TG4 Headquarters in Baile na hAbhann in the Galway Gaeltacht where the Minister met with the Board of the Irish language channel, met staff and saw at first hand the state of the art in-house studio production and broadcast facilities.

In addition, the creation of new and innovative Irish language learning web portals and apps for learning Irish through the project could benefit the Government's 20-Year Irish Language Strategy.
