Government agrees to nominate Ms Kathleen O'Toole to chair Commission on the Future of Policing in Ireland

The Tanaiste and Minister for Justice Frances Fitzgerald today received Government agreement to nominate Ms Kathleen O’Toole to the position of chair of the Commission on the Future of Policing in Ireland. Ms O’Toole, who is currently Chief of the Seattle Police Department held the position of Chief Inspector of the Garda Inspectorate between 2006 and 2012. She was formerly the Commissioner of the Boston Police from 2004-2006.

She was also a member of the Independent Commission on Policing for Northern Ireland (Patten Commission) established in 1998 to inquire into policing in Northern Ireland.

Ms O’Toole’s unique experience and expertise ensures she is uniquely qualified for important task to be undertaken by the Commission.

The Commission will undertake a comprehensive examination of all aspects of policing including all functions currently carried out by An Garda Síochána.

The Tánaiste is finalising the terms of reference following consultations and expects to bring them to Cabinet shortly.
