Minister Cannon congratulates Galway’s 3,058 Leaving Certificate Students

The Minister for Training and Skills, Ciarán Cannon T.D., has sent his congratulations to the 3,058 Leaving Certificate students in Galway who are receiving their examination results today.

2,965 students in Galway sat the Established Leaving Certificate, with 93 students sitting the Leaving Cert Applied Programme.

“Students across Galway getting their results today should be proud of their achievements in the Leaving Certificate examinations, and look forward to the future with confidence,” said Minister Cannon.

The Minister hoped that the knowledge acquired by students over the course of their studies would benefit them and the economy in the future. “As Minister for Training and Skills I hope that you will continue to engage with the education system, whether through the higher education sector or the further education and training system. This will equip you with the skills and knowledge to fulfil your potential and contribute to the growth of our economy”, the Minister added.

A total of 55,815 students sat their Leaving Cert across the country this year; this is down about 3.2% on the number last year. Of these, 52,589 sat the Established Leaving Cert and Leaving Cert Vocational Programme and 3,226 sat the Leaving Cert Applied Programme.

Earlier this week, Minister Cannon called on students planning to celebrate their Leaving Cert results by travelling abroad to familiarise themselves with the travel advice issued by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade on its website (http://www.dfa.ie/home/index.aspx?id=284).

“The key piece of advice is to have travel insurance, behave sensibly and avoid unnecessary risks,” said the Minister.
