The Minister for Education and Skills, Ruairí Quinn T.D., today opened a major school extension at Scoil Choilm, Porterstown, Clonsilla, Dublin 15.

The new state of the art buildings include 16 classrooms, special needs facilities for two special needs classes and a general purpose hall.

The schools currently has almost 550 pupils but when fully developed will have the capacity to cater for more than 900 pupils from junior infants to sixth class.

Scoil Cholim is a Community National School with a multi-denominational ethos whose patron is Dublin and Dun Laoghaire ETB.

These new buildings, were provided under Phase Two of the Rapid Build Programme and were delivered as part of a joint project with Luttrelstown Community College. The major expansion of the school cost some €11 million.

An initial phase of 16 classrooms was delivered under the Rapid Build Programme in 2008.

Speaking at the launch, Minister Quinn said, “I’m delighted to be here today to open these new school buildings, which are a great addition to the facilities already available. This new multi-denominational school has now doubled in size and with its new facilities will be even better equipped to serve the community here.”

“Principal, Treasa Lowe, the board of management and all the school community are to be congratulated for the hard work which made these wonderful new buildings possible.”

The Minister also acknowledged the very active parent community and Parents’ Association, who support the principal and staff very well in their work.

“I know that the parents have been centrally involved in organising various events as part of your celebration of ‘School Community Day.’ Vibrant schools need vibrant parents who are engaged with their children’s school and that is clearly the case with Scoil Cholim,” he said.
