The Minister for Research and Innovation, Seán Sherlock T.D., wished Leaving and Junior Cert students the best of luck, particularly as they sit papers in maths and the sciences and technologies. Students are sitting the Project Maths papers today.

The Minister said, “State examinations are a landmark in students’ lives. For many, it is their first time sitting them, and for others, it marks the culmination of their time in post-primary.

“This year is an important development in the roll-out of Project Maths across the country. For the first time, all Junior Cert students will be examined in at least some elements of the new curriculum. At Leaving Cert level, students will be answering questions from the new syllabus for the second year- they are being examined in four of the Programme’s five strands.”

This is the second year that Leaving Cert students taking Higher Level Maths can gain 25 bonus CAO points. Increased numbers of students have opted to take the Higher Level Paper.

Minister Sherlock said: “I am very pleased that some 4,000 additional students have opted this year to take Higher Level Leaving Cert. Maths. I know that students can change their minds on the day of the exam itself, but I would urge students to believe in themselves and the work that they have done for this subject.”
