Minister Murphy calls in local authority chiefs to accelerate housing solutions for homeless families

Minister for Housing, Planning & Local Government Mr Eoghan Murphy T.D., earlier today (19 June 2017) chaired a meeting with the four Dublin Local Authorities. The purpose of the meeting was to conduct a detailed examination of the work being done to help homeless families who are being accommodated in hotels and B&Bs on an emergency basis to exit that accommodation. Minister Murphy wants this practice to end as quickly as possible in the context of the end-of-June target of only using commercial hotels/B&Bs in exceptional circumstances for homeless families. He is also considering additional policy responses.

Minister Murphy, commenting after the meeting: "The practice of placing families in to hotels when they present as homeless has to stop. This is the most unacceptable aspect of the current homeless and housing crisis. Local authorities are doing exceptional work but we cannot rest until that work is done. The numbers and options available to us need to be interrogated further and I will be keeping the situation under daily review."
