Minister Hogan approves further contracts of the Dublin Region Watermains Rehabilitation

Mr. Phil Hogan, T.D., Minister for the  Environment, Community and Local Government has today ( 12   July, 2011) announced that he has approved funding to allow Dublin City Council to accept the €4.42m tender of J. Murphy & Sons for Contract No. 6 of the Dublin Region Watermains Rehabilitation Project and the €3.35m tender of Gerry McCloskey (IRL) Limited (GMC)  for Contract No. 12 of the project.  The contracts are being financed under the Minister’s Water Services Investment Programme 2010-2012.

“These contracts, which are elements of a coordinated approach to arrest water leakage in the Dublin Region, involves rehabilitation works in the Green Street, All Hallows, Church Street and Grand Canal Street areas of the city and in Glenageary and Sallynoggin.”, said the Minister.  “Work is being carried out in a number of tranches and the outcome should be improvement in the quality and reliability of the water supply to the public, supporting commercial and industrial activity so crucial to economic recovery”.

Mains rehabilitation work is a key priority under the Department’s Water Services Investment Programme 2010 – 2012 and the Minister said that his approval of the funding for this contract reflects the need to deliver to consumers a drinking water supply that is reliable and fully compliant with drinking water standards and the priority being given to water conservation and to addressing unsustainable levels of unaccounted for water in the distribution system.

The Minister confirmed that his approval clears the way for work to commence and that he “will be asking Dublin City Council to get construction underway as quickly as possible.”
