The Taoiseach Enda Kenny TD today congratulated Polish Prime Minister, Donald Tusk, on his election as the next President of the European Council.

The Taoiseach said: 'I have worked closely with Donald over the past few years and am delighted at his election as President of the European Council. I look forward to working closely with Donald in driving forward the agenda of growth, jobs and investment.'

The Taoiseach added: 'This is the most senior post in the EU to be filled by a candidate from a country that joined in 2004 and is a real proof of how the EU has transformed our continent.'

He referred to the particularly strong ties between Ireland and Poland, including the very many Polish people who have come to live in Ireland since their entry to the EU.

The Taoiseach also congratulated Federica Mogherini on her appointment as High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy. He said: 'I am delighted at Federica's appointment as High Representative.
